When we think about old age, we usually imagine a picture of an old man, stooped, wrinkled, with thin grey hair, half deaf, half blind, suffering from monumental sclerosis, lying in bed, or shuffling his feet while walking.

Although this is a common picture of our declining years, it doesn’t have to look like this. If you just start preparing for the bright autumn of life early enough, you can avoid the majority of these symptoms and signs of old age.

First of all – diet. A balanced diet may help you to avoid high cholesterol, artherosclerosis and heart disease, and it also helps to keep your brain in good condition.

Although what we eat is very important, physical activity is very essential. It keeps your body younger and forces it to work more effectively. Also try stimulating blood circulation: it exercises the brain.

„If you don’t want to lose it, use it!” Using the brain is a fundamental thing to keep you intellectually efficient. Many varied techniques have been invented recently. Mnemonics can be a very successful way of exercising the brain. The traditional methods, like reading, crosswords and games are also very welcome.

It doesn’t sound terrible, does it? Don’t you think a good life is worth this relatively small amount of effort? Well, think about it the next time you sink your teeth into a hamburger dripping with fat
